Indigo

Indigo

I dye with natural dyes, my specialty being indigo.

I dye scarves and ribbons with home-grown fresh indigo leaves every summer. The process is repeated, but the items are still one of a kind. Traditionally indigo has been used to obtain blue, it is the blue of blue jeans. However, three additional colors can be obtained from the indigo leaf; pink, yellow, and green. Indirubin is expressed as a pink or lavender color on cloth. The extract is used medicinally for leukemia and is being researched for other cancers. As a dye it is a very rare color; I have been researching techniques to obtain it on cloth since 2006. I teach the techniques to obtain all four colors, and a monograph is available here.
